Mind heart and the City

Mind heart and the City

Mind heart and the City documents downtown Asheville’s most recent iteration of gentrification as it strives to maintain the diversity of its bohemian mountain culture. The images reveal a people and culture experiencing a paradigm shift as it transitions into the new millennium. The show will be a mix of approximately 50 black and white and color silver gelatin prints captured completely on film shot over a ten year period. Although the use of film is not the main focus the project, my intent was to rediscover the 20th century humanist approach to street photography via the utilization of old manual film cameras to explore and document city life. There will be two books, Mind heart and the City and The Last Memory that will accompany the exhibition.

The exhibit will feature photographs from both books. The video below features images from the upcoming show and accompanying books. The show will run from April 6 to April 27, 2018 at the Emporium Center Gallery, 100 S. Gay Street, Knoxville, TN 37902.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018. Sorry

Pack Square, downtown Asheville, North Carolina.

This photo is from a series on images I had taken in the Spring of 2017. The gentleman on the left explained to me that he awoke that very morning with a realization―a paradigm shift if you will―about his old beliefs regarding race. With this new understanding, he fashioned a white robe out of old underwear to mimic that of a traditional Ku Klux Klan robe. The significance of the Vance Monument in the background (Zebulon Vance was a slave owner) was not lost on me, and in the series of images managed to capture both the monument and the gentleman’s interaction with people that passed by out of obvious curiosity. Needless to say, his garment caught many off guard, and went out of his way to explain the significance of his actions that day. The rather chaotically composed shot pictured here was caught as I was balancing my camera and another person’s smartphone who wanted me to help record an impromptu interview with the man.

These are small steps. But Progress has always been an ongoing process of participation.

Several other images from this encounter will be on exhibit in 2018 along with more of my photographs. I will announce details in the near future.

Free Fall

The image below is from a recent family photo shoot in Marshall, North Carolina. The small children that participated in the family gathering began to grow somewhat tired (let’s say, “cranky”) of the the whole affair and were becoming less cooperative. The young girl pictured here was more concerned about being close to her mother and leaned in for this quick and charming grab shot. As I was conscious of the graphic possibilities of the reds in the previous group shots using this barn as the backdrop, it was by chance that the girl’s red dress created a cascading effect showing repeated movement in what would otherwise be a more stagnant composition.
