Sorry

Pack Square, downtown Asheville, North Carolina.

This photo is from a series on images I had taken in the Spring of 2017. The gentleman on the left explained to me that he awoke that very morning with a realization―a paradigm shift if you will―about his old beliefs regarding race. With this new understanding, he fashioned a white robe out of old underwear to mimic that of a traditional Ku Klux Klan robe. The significance of the Vance Monument in the background (Zebulon Vance was a slave owner) was not lost on me, and in the series of images managed to capture both the monument and the gentleman’s interaction with people that passed by out of obvious curiosity. Needless to say, his garment caught many off guard, and went out of his way to explain the significance of his actions that day. The rather chaotically composed shot pictured here was caught as I was balancing my camera and another person’s smartphone who wanted me to help record an impromptu interview with the man.

These are small steps. But Progress has always been an ongoing process of participation.

Several other images from this encounter will be on exhibit in 2018 along with more of my photographs. I will announce details in the near future.

Free Fall

The image below is from a recent family photo shoot in Marshall, North Carolina. The small children that participated in the family gathering began to grow somewhat tired (let’s say, “cranky”) of the the whole affair and were becoming less cooperative. The young girl pictured here was more concerned about being close to her mother and leaned in for this quick and charming grab shot. As I was conscious of the graphic possibilities of the reds in the previous group shots using this barn as the backdrop, it was by chance that the girl’s red dress created a cascading effect showing repeated movement in what would otherwise be a more stagnant composition.

Night Shift

Seen here is William Stafford (left) and his work associate who serve as security for the Grove Arcade on Page Avenue in downtown Asheville. William is also a very well known rhythm and blues singer, performing in numerous Asheville music venues through the years. He recently left his old band Motown Blue to pursue his solo ambitions.

September Weddings

Some highlights from several weddings that I had shot this past September. As formal as some moments would appear, each was both a mix of ease and chaos. A rare departure from my street photography work. Enjoy!

Marriage of Lindsey and Joshua, September 18, 2016. Location: Fontaine Vineyards, Leicester, North Carolina.

No Justice, No Peace

Rally held for man killed by police in Asheville, NC. July 6, 2016.

We want the truth - Patton Avenue.

We want the truth – Patton Avenue.

Friends, supporters and family of 35 years old Jai Williams (known as “Jerry” to family and friends), who was gunned down on Saturday, July 2 at Deaverview Apartments in Asheville, gathered at the downtown Asheville Police Department on Wednesday, July 6. The demonstrators demanded answers as to what actually occurred in the confrontation between Williams and the Asheville police on the night of the shooting. Although little local media coverage was to be found, family and friends were interviewed by Channel 7 News from Spartanburg, SC.

The protest was peaceful but passionate. Chanting “No justice, no peace”, the demonstration made its way though the streets of downtown before stopping in front of the Asheville Police Department. As the rally neared its end, in a display of passive resistance, protest signs that were carried through the streets by the demonstrators were laid out in front of the Asheville Police Department as a reminder that all lives are entitled to equal acknowledgement and respect.

The police officer involved in the altercation is currently on administrative leave. The State Bureau of Investigations has been called in to investigate the case.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up to collect funds that will be exclusively used to cover any legal fees, counseling services, and other ancillary expenses related to seeking justice for Jai Williams.

Further updates regarding the incident have been released by the family that contradicts the official police reports. More information can be found via this link.
