Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC, October 29, 2016
I had the honor of shooting the engagement of Anish and Tia at the Biltmore Estate this past October. I was contacted by Anish who planned to surprise his financee-to-be with his proposal at the outdoor Diana Venue located about 200 feet from the entrance of the Biltmore House. The plan was to coordinate our time and locations so that I would be at the Diana just before their arrival. I was to pass myself off as a tourist, and Anish would approach me asking if I would take a photo of them with his smartphone. All went to plan. I fiddled with the smart phone, stuck it in my pocket, pulled out my own camera and captured Anish on bended knee as he proposed to Tia. As you can see by the reaction of Tia in the first photo, she obviously never saw it coming!
We then hopped onto a bus that took us to the Biltmore winery where, once again, Tia was taken by surprise by being greeted by Anish’s parents and extended family that he had secretly flown in for the engagement.

A candid shot of a couple passing through downtown Asheville. It was a week later while reviewing the image that I noticed the cat nestled on the shoulders of the man on the right.

The Couple, downtown Asheville
A rather apt title worthy of a B movie thriller considering the circumstances. While moving about the city streets, this (I’m presuming visiting) couple approached me and asked if I would take a picture of them with their smartphone. They also confessed to me that were keeping track of my movements for some 45 minutes; even coming up with some story to flesh out the background of my street prowling. Well, the lyrics of the Simon and Garfunkel song “America” came to mind:
“She said the man in the gaberdine suit was a spy
I said be careful, his bow tie is really a camera”
But my actual response was, “And the story ended with my taking your photo!”
I was more than happy to oblige. Actually, I rather liked the image I had taken on their phone—more a street portrait than street photography. I then made a request to take a photo of them for my own record of our encounter. They quickly closed in on themselves and I took this one shot.
They never did reveal to me the plot of their contrived story, but I am considering a gaberdine suit for sometime in the future.
